trial sewing

How was your weekend? I had a good one because I managed to do some sewing :) more on that later. I wanted to show you this zipped hoodie from Uniqlo. It's from the Uniqlo-Greengate collection. I like how Uniqlo collaborates with all my favourite brands. They previously had collections with Laura Ashley and Cath Kidston. Now it's Cabbage Roses and Greengate! The best thing is that Uniqlo is affordable and reasonably priced. The hoodie which comes with UV protection was on sale for S$19.90!

I drafted a skirt pattern with back vent for myself. But I couldn't cut the fabric (the first fabric I mentioned in my last post) because I had to soak and dry it first. This is the first time that I am pre-washing fabric before sewing. Makes me feel all grown up as a home sewer :) Since I was itching to sew something, I sewed a trial pair of shorts/skirt for my daughter. I’m not sure what it is called but it’s a pair of shorts that looks like a gathered skirt. I found the pattern in the Japanese sewing magazine, FEMALE, summer 2009 and sewed it out of an old rayon fabric remnant to try out the pattern.

Good thing I tried out the pattern first because I need to make adjustments to the fit. First, the rise is too short. It is rather strange for an elastic waist shorts/skirt to be designed to sit low on the waist. So for the next version of this shorts/skirt, I have added 1.5 inches to the rise on the paper pattern. Hopefully that is enough. I will also modify the waistband construction. The pattern had a curved waistline, which I like, but the sewing instructions simply called for the addition of a 2.5cm seam allowance which is then folded down and sewn as the waistband casing. I managed to sew the curved waistband by easing the fabric slowly as I sewed and the slight stretch in the rayon fabric helped, but it was a hassle. For the next version, to save me the hassle of dealing with the curved waistline, I will sew on an attached waistband. Now I need to go shopping for some pretty floral fabric with a nice soft drape to sew the next version of this shorts/skirt. Wish me luck!

  1. love the shorts..and I'm also going to check out the hoodie brand - I've never heard of them before...
you always make the cutest stuff,is the weather warm there now?? I was surprised to hear how warm it is there from your older posts - what would be the coolest temps you get?

  2. The shorts are very cute! It is very hard to tell the rise of things. I like that Burda tells you where things will sit in their notes (which is funny considering how short their sewing up notes are!). I'm glad you washed and dried the material, I'd hate the pretty skirt you're going to make shrink up to a mini!
